Our next home match is scheduled for June 10, 7pm at Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex.

Our last match:  Wednesday night the Yellowhammers U23 got back to their winning ways as they handled FC Birmingham of UPSL 3-1 at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex.

The first goal game 20 minutes into the match on a wide free kick.  The ball was played low and firm across the 6 yard box wear Braelen Francis was able to flick it past the keeper and into the back of the net.

The second goal came midway through the 2nd half when Javier Miranda was fouled inside the Penalty Area and a PK was given. FC Birmingham’s keeper made a great save but couldn’t hold the ball and Braelen Francis was there again for the tap in.

Yellowhammers 3rd came off a free kick that was taken by Reeves Knox who beat the keeper to the near post from a wide angle.

FC Birmingham pulled one back late in the game off a streaking run down that left that left 2 Yellowhammers beaten and the ball in the back of the net.

Next up for Yellowhammers U23 is Legion 2 on June 23.

May 30: Yellowhammers U23 faced Southern Soccer Academy (SSA) USL 2 in an exhibition game on Saturday, May 30 at 2pm at the Franklin Gateway Soccer Complex in Marietta, GA.  The final score was 2-1 in favor of SSA.

SSA dominated the early play with lots of possession and a few shots but no real chances on goal. At the 34 minute mark SSA finally got their goal off a throw in and flick that resulted in an easy tap in from 8 yards out.

Early in the second half, Yellowhammers tied the match on a 40 yard effort from Braelen Francis that caught the keeper out of his goal. 49 minutes and the score was 1-1.

It didn’t take long for SSA to regain the lead.  In the 51st minute Kynu Samuels drove to the end line and served a cross from the right wing. A hand ball was called on defender Jackson Hartman.  The resulting penalty was tucked away calmly and SSA was back in front.

SSA continued to dominate possession and Yellowhammers U23 continued to create chances on the counter.  Both teams could have scored more but in the end, SSA maintained their edge in possession and their high pressing style prevented Yellowhammers from creating enough to get the second goal.

“SSA’s speed of play made things really difficult for us in the first half.  I thought our guys did a great job settling down in the second half.  We gave them very few big chances and created a few for ourselves.  Playing tough games early allows us to learn and develop as we see where our weaknesses are.  For game two, I was very happy with the effort and the cohesion we displayed” said head Coach Mike Getman

May 9: Yellowhammers U23 faced Montgomery United Academy in an exhibition game on Friday night at 7pm.  The final score was 1-1.

Yellowhammers U23 dominated the early play with lots of possession and several good chances on goal. Braelen Francis scored the first goal in the 19th minute.  Poor finishing kept the Yellowhammers from adding to their lead from that point on.  With both teams making substitutions late in the half, the flow turned in favor of Montgomery United.

Sam Bruns, captain of Yellowhammers was very solid at the back, keeping the team organized and playing out comfortably.  Christian Ortiz in Defensive Midfield was also key in helping Yellowhammers keep possession.  His quick movement of the ball kept Montgomery United off balance throughout the match.

Ten minutes into the second half, Montgomery United rattled a shot off the crossbar and the rebound was finished nicely.

Yellowhammers put the pressure back on throughout the second half with 9 shots on target and many others that were shot high or wide.

"I thought we played well in possession but looked rusty in front of goal.  That is what you expect with any team at the start of the season.  The overall play was very good and I was happy with the effort from everyone” said head Coach Mike Getman
